I started a kickball league, simply to spend time with friends, but the joy of bringing fun and relief to my community inspired me to seek a new career.
After 13 years in corporate sales, I grew tired of the grind and took time to reflect on what was next. “How did I get here?” I asked myself, since sales was far from what I had envisioned when I was young.
I was an athlete in high school, competing in wrestling and later throwing the javelin in college while earning my degree in sociology. I entered the workforce as a therapeutic staff member for a small company funded by the state to care for children with behavioral challenges and autism. My role was hands-on—I went to their homes, accompanied them to school, and worked closely with their teachers. I was helping these kids manage their emotions and navigate their world.
A couple of years into this job, I switched to a completely different role as a salesman for office machines. Every day, I was in an office, dressed in a suit, going out and knocking on doors, selling copiers, printers, and other equipment. It was a stark contrast to my previous role, but I adapted.
Meanwhile, I kept throwing the javelin and staying connected to athletics. I met my wife, Amy, through mutual friends, and we welcomed our children, Stratton and Grace. Becoming a parent changed everything. The responsibility of keeping another human alive and raising them to be a good person was overwhelming at times. It was a sink-or-swim moment that required total commitment. Although we spent our family time doing fun activities outdoors, I felt a growing sense of anxiety and hints of depression.
To find relief, I started a kickball league—just as a way to bring friends together, socialize, and have fun. It caught on, and as more people joined, I turned it into a business, with players paying to compete across the country. I noticed that many players were dealing with similar struggles as I have in the past. It brought me joy to see how something as simple as a kickball league could bring people relief.
That joy was something I missed in my previous roles. After 13 years of cold calls and slammed doors, I was burned out. Selling office machines was tough—people weren’t excited about the product, and I was constantly facing rejection.
One of my friends inspired me to switch careers and join his team as a REALTOR®. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Now, I work with people from all walks of life, guiding them through one of the most significant decisions they’ll ever make. Real estate became another way for me to be of service and to make a real impact in people’s lives.
I still manage the kickball league on the side. I also volunteer as an elementary wrestling coach and a high school javelin coach. Coaching is something I love. I see young athletes struggling, and I’m happy to be the person they can talk to, someone who checks in on them and encourages and mentors them when needed.
My wife and 2 children love going camping together and spending as much time outdoors as possible. Whether it’s through coaching, real estate, or my kickball league, it’s rewarding to bring joy and positivity to my community in different ways.
Homeownership may seem out of reach, but with the right guidance, it’s absolutely possible. I love educating my clients on the real estate process and seeing that moment when everything clicks. Buying or selling a home is more than just a financial decision—it’s an emotional journey. With my background in athletics, I’ve learned to listen, validate feelings, and provide steady support. When we work together, we’re a team. I’m in the trenches with my clients, anticipating challenges, offering creative solutions, and keeping the process as smooth as possible. Clear communication is key, and I make sure my clients always know what’s coming next.
To me, real estate is about more than just transactions—it’s about building relationships. I take the time to truly understand my clients’ needs, ensuring they feel supported from start to finish. I also have a trusted network of vendors available to help before, during, and after the sale. My goal isn’t just to help people buy or sell a home; it’s to empower them to achieve their real estate dreams with confidence.
Sincerely,
Jason McMullen
